Abstract:

Li-ion batteries are the most promising energy sources for electric vehicles and biomedical implantable devices. They have therefore attracted the significant attention of the materials science and chemistry communities for over fifteen years. Before, however, we can fully utilize the most promising materials, such as Si and Sn, as next generation anodes. We must understand their mechanical behavior during the Li-intercalation and de-intercalation processes. The present talk will elaborate on advances that have been made, thus far in this area, and illustrate how they can be used to develop design criteria. It is shown that the theoretical predictions are in very good agreement with experimental data.
